Selba

For my very first blog post, Selba was kind of an amazing kick-off. It was a bit fancier than we anticipated but not so fancy that we felt uncomfortable wearing casual clothes. The atmosphere was amazing and the staff were attentive and pleasant. We were seated in the Garden Room- an open, plant filled room with large ajar windows, and on that balmy night of 80 degrees (!) it was the perfect place to enjoy a meal. The main room, boasted a full bar and a grand piano accompanied with a pianist playing well recognized, upbeat tunes. I enjoyed a Crispin blackberry pear hard cider with a complementary bulgur wheat and quinoa appetizer with house made lime flavored chips while waiting for our meal. I was immediately impressed with how quickly our food came out! I ordered the coconut curry mussels and fried brussel sprouts and Grant ordered the brisket. The mussels were killer. Spicy, savory and sweet, the half pound Prince Edward Island mussels were obviously fresh since they had no "fishy" taste, and I was not far off from drinking the sauce that was left over as I tried soaking it up with the fresh, toasted bread that came with it. The beer battered crispy brussel sprouts, sprinkled with sea salt were delightful with the smoked tomato and english remoulade. Both were ordered from the "small plates" portion of the menu and it was more than enough for one person- Grant and I ended up splitting the brussel sprouts. The beef brisket, garnished with crispy, swirly sweet potato and paired with corn salad melted in Grant's mouth, as he described. It was tender and soaked in a delightful smokey- sweet barbecue baste. The corn salad exhibited notes of cilantro, cucumber and tomato for a fresh, crisp contrast to the sweet, savory barbecue. Selba is suitable for vegetarians and omnivores alike; the menu has more vegetarian options than the average restaurant. Another great contribution to the menu is the gluten free, vegetarian and vegan section. Selba goes out of its way to serve fresh, natural and locally sourced produce and proteins, and it certainly made all the difference!

For our monetary restrictions, Selba was slightly expensive but I would not say was not overpriced.
The value was true and we felt confident about spending the money because he food was great and the atmosphere was great and for this occasion we didn't mind paying for it.

In summation, Selba is perfect for an intimate date, family get together or to celebrate a special occasion. The atmosphere is above par and caters to the flexibility of your wallet as well as individuals  with dietary restrictions or those who are simply health conscious. You may spend a little more but you will not be disappointed with the experience

  1. your mussels look like they are as good as Toby's Tavern in Coupeville.. "penn cove" mussels, always staying under water, are so tender... Prince Edward is an island north of vancouver, I think.... nice!

    1. I don't know first hand if they were as good as Toby's as I've never actually tasted them but I can tell you they were great! they were super tender and didn't have that weird texture mussels and oysters have sometimes :)
